Assisted Migration Corridors

Since everyone knows that small things can make a big difference, whether it be a smile, an encouraging word, a hospital visit, or just the knowledge that people care, these little gestures can have a profound effect. The implemented concept initiated by the Credit Valley Conservation’s “Bird-Friendly Haying” plan is a great first step along the altruistic road. Attached below are several affiliated articles that detail the necessity of such projects.

CVC Bird Friendly Certified Hay – this information comes directly from the Credit Valley Conservation and will provide you with a variety of information about the program including the requirements, benefits to our flying friends, as well as incentives for those involved.

Grassland Birds in Decline – Bobolink – one of many birds / insects that has been negatively affected by the loss of habitat and a direct beneficiary of the bird-friendly haying program.

Today’s butterfly effect is tomorrow’s trouble – another beneficiary of improved migration routes is the increasingly elusive monarch butterfly. We have written several times about the noticeable drop in their numbers, and can only hope this bird-friendly program could be butterfly-friendly, as well.

In addition, for those who have access to the Erin Advocate, their monthly edition of Country Routes, has another interesting and information article about the program, written by Karen Dallimore and entitled “Bird friendly haying.”

Happy reading and Happy Holidays! We would like to wish everyone peace, prosperity and good health for 2015!
