In August 2020, Upkaran Sandhu’s dump truck collided with Patricia Lopez’s Hyundai Veloster at an intersection in Caledon, resulting in Lopez’s death. Sandhu was charged with careless driving causing death under the Highway Traffic Act, and assistant crown attorney Ayoub Ansari claimed that Sandhu was driving a vehicle with “major defects” that should not have been driven. The dump truck had multiple critical defects, including faulty brakes, according to testimony by a commercial vehicle inspector. The court proceedings were delayed multiple times due to Sandhu’s failure to appear in court and his failure to obtain a lawyer or apply for legal aid. Ansari claimed that Sandhu entered the intersection on a red light and showed a lack of due care or attention for other persons on that day. Sandhu declined to comment in court and didn’t provide any statement of defense in his case. The decision is scheduled to be made on June 23.
