Caledonians Demand Change!

Less than 2 weeks from now our school buses start rolling along our busy roads. Meanwhile, our Regional roads (HWY 10, 9 & 50) limp forward on their 1970 infrastructure. Last week, the Caledon Enterprise’s article highlighted how Lina Lawrence is cautious when visiting the post office due to safety concerns on Highway 10 in Caledon. The area has heavy traffic, including trucks, and locals try to avoid accidents. Cindy Ulla, a resident, laments the loss of the village feel due to traffic and hopes for a bypass to redirect traffic. Highway 10 runs through Caledon’s west side, gathering traffic from various places. It’s a busy commuter and truck route. Data from Caledon OPP reveals fatalities and collisions on this stretch. Caledon Coun. Lynn Kiernan collected traffic data after a fatal collision involving a friend. She pushed for safety improvements and got the Ministry of Transportation to conduct traffic audits. Alain Beaulieu from the ministry will conduct operational reviews on Highway 10 from Valleywood Blvd to Hwy 9 and the intersection at Hwy 10 and 9 to Hwy 89. Orangeville Mayor Lisa Post highlighted issues at the Hwy 10 and McCannell Road intersection. The study aims to bring positive changes by reviewing collision history, road design, and more. The study’s results, expected by late 2023, could lead to safety enhancements on the road, addressing short- and long-term concerns. Residents and officials appreciate the attention but emphasize the importance of tangible improvements to ensure road safety and prevent accidents.
